International and U.S. Action

International Action

The global nature of climate change requires a significant and coordinated response from the international community. WRI works with governments, corporations, and nongovernmental organizations around the world to find ways to limit greenhouse gas emissions and improve adaptive capacity in both developed and developing countries.

  • Climate Policy Design—building on the 1992 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.
  • Sustainable Development—helping major developing countries meet their development goals while simultaneously protecting the global climate system from further harm.
  • Measuring Greenhouse Gas Emissions—establishing an internationally accepted system for tracking and reporting greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Sustainable Transportation—creating technically and environmentally sound solutions to the problems of urban transit.
  • Reducing Climate Vulnerability—helping communities adapt to altered weather patterns, increased threats of natural disasters and other climate change impacts.

U.S. Actions

The United States emits more greenhouse gases than any other country. To successfully address climate change, the US must rejoin the international community and provide leadership on the issue. WRI works with US leaders at all levels to develop policies that will significantly reduce US greenhouse gas emissions. WRI also works with major US companies to develop technologies and growth strategies for a carbon-constrained world.

  • Emissions Markets—helping develop consistent carbon markets that promote investment in cost-effective and environmentally sound emissions reductions.
  • Climate Northeast—collaborating to build strategies and tools for companies to thrive in a carbon-constrained economy.
  • Greenhouse Gas Registries—laying the foundation for a national greenhouse gas registry and carbon emissions trading system in the United States.
  • Green Power/Renewable Energy—convening leading companies to develop US corporate markets for renewable energy use.
  • Carbon Capture and Storage—working to ensure high environmental, health and social standards in carbon capture and storage projects.
